In 1998, the department started offering MS in Computer Science. After its success, the department expanded its graduate program and started offering Ph.D. in computer science and computer engineering in 2001. The primary focus of the graduate program is to inculcate the research culture in Pakistan, in general, and at LUMS in particular, solve problems of national and international relevance, and produce quality teachers in Computer Science and Computer Engineering.
In autumn 2003, the department moved to a newly constructed building which is more spacious than the previous location. An important feature of this new location is the greater number of research labs adjacent to the faculty offices which include the Computer Vision Lab, Networking and Communication Lab, Robotics and Intelligent Computing Lab, and Neighborhood for Emerging World Technologies.
